I’ll Have What She’s Having

Are you jealous of someone? Do you want what they’ve got?

Perfect. Use that emotion productively.

Feeling jealous means you have been woken up to something you want. And you have an example of someone who was able to get it.

When I feel jealous I can sit in my anger, let it fester, and allow my resentments to grow, rendering myself motionless. Or I can start asking relevant questions:

  1. Who am I jealous of?
  2. What do I want that they have?
  3. How did they get what I am looking for?
  4. What paths on their route do I have access to?
  5. What work did they do that I can add to my task list?

I know that some people were born with more privilege than me and some got handed less than me. In this exercise, I don’t focus on that. I find the commonalities. I compare what is the same between me and another person so that I can see the open roads available to me rather than just focusing on the struggles.

Borrow from the person you’re jealous of. Make them your mentor. Not your enemy. Not your god. Your mentor.

Action: Take the time to learn from the person/people you are jealous of. Notice their achievements and their mistakes. They created a path. Use it.
