Dialing Down the Drama: Mastering Your Inner Dialogue for a More Positive You

Imagine your mind as a bustling marketplace. There’s a stern vendor hawking self-criticism, a cheerleader offering encouragement, and a loud troubadour stuck on a catchy jingle. These are just a few of the many voices that vie for our attention, a chorus of messages from parents, teachers, society, and even ourselves. It’s easy to get swept away in this noise, but the key is to become a discerning listener.

Recently, I fumbled my favorite mug. It shattered on the floor, and a familiar voice – the one prone to harsh pronouncements – started berating me. But this time, I stopped. I asked myself, “Is this voice helping me pick up the pieces?” The answer was clear: No. It was just adding negativity to an already frustrating situation.

So, I switched tactics. I dialed down the critic and turned up the voice of reason. It reminded me that accidents happen, and getting upset wouldn’t mend the mug. Cleaning up the mess became a mindful act, a way to learn from the experience and move forward.

If we pay attention throughout the day, we can notice how our thoughts are helping or hurting us. As we learn what is useful and what is unnecessary, we can have control over the volume dial of our mind.

ACTION: Take a quiet moment to listen to your inner chatter. Are there voices constantly criticizing or holding you back? Notice them, but don’t judge. You can choose to turn down the volume and amplify a more helpful voice – the one that empowers you to move forward.
