Getting to Know Me

We make countless decisions every day, all based on the information and experiences we’ve accumulated throughout our lives. Why did we choose that salad for lunch? Why didn’t we book that beach vacation? Why did we react a certain way when talking to that person?

These choices, big and small, are shaped by the “self” we’ve become. Our childhood experiences and the lessons we’ve learned as adults all play a role.

That’s why it’s important for me to keep learning about who I am. By getting to know myself better, I can navigate tough choices and crossroads with greater confidence.  Understanding who I am and what I want helps me make the right choices for me.

What does my dream life look like? What are my core values? What have my past choices and reactions been, and what did I like and dislike about them?

When I come to a fork in the road, I can decide by asking myself: what would someone with my dreams and values do?

Was I hoping to be a warm person? Go where the warmth is. Was I hoping to be very social? Choose the direction more likely to be friendly.

The more I know about who I am, the easier it will be to make decisions that direct me towards that person.

ACTION: When you need to make a decision ask yourself which choice brings you closer to the person you want to be.
