It’s All in Your Head

“He said it’s all in your head, I said ‘so’s everything’…” Fiona Apple (song: Paper Bag)

Our thoughts are the driving force behind everything we do. Even seemingly physical actions, like typing these words, originate from mental processes. The mind is incredibly powerful, and our thoughts can have a profound impact, both positive and negative. I’ve even worried myself into a stomachache!

Recognizing this power, I’ve developed the habit of actively checking my thoughts throughout the day. I ask myself key questions: “Is this thought helpful? Will this mindset serve me well in this situation? Is this thought both true and necessary right now?”

By pausing to assess my thoughts, I can determine if they are empowering or hindering. Productive thoughts propel me forward, while unhelpful ones are replaced with gentleness and more constructive alternatives. For instance, I might catch myself thinking, “I’ll never be good enough at this,” and instead ask, “What do I need to learn to complete the next step?”

With practice, the ability to identify and replace negative thought patterns strengthens. This leads to a more relaxed, mindful, and productive day.

ACTION: Take a moment today to check in with your thought process. Are your current thought patterns serving you well? If not, can you reframe them in a more empowering way?
