Not Just Happy

I wasn’t always in the habit of asking myself how I am feeling. Instead, my consistent question was “why aren’t I happy”. Happiness was my only desire. If I didn’t have it, I needed to go get it. I was chasing one feeling and avoiding all others. It felt desperate.

I can’t always be happy. Have you ever been around someone who is “always happy”? It feels disingenuous.

When I sincerely ask myself how I feel I can open myself to the range of emotions that I might be experiencing. Once I know how I feel I can ask myself relevant questions like why am I feeling this way and how do I want to respond to it.

By getting to know myself, I can live more realistically, leading to finding my practical, sensible next steps. Which, sometimes, makes me smile.

Action: ask yourself how you feel throughout the day. Notice what triggers your happiness, sadness, and any other emotion. Don’t try to change it. Notice it.
