I have no big or exciting activities scheduled for today. There will be nothing to post about on social media, nothing to report back when I get home, and no new interesting stories to tell. Today is just a regular day. I have plans to do my morning routine, go on my daily bike ride, and get my daily work and chores done. I don’t have plans for tonight, and I might not make any.
So why get out of bed? If there seems to be nothing to look forward to, where does motivation come from?
DIVERSIFY: I had to stop looking for excitement. Seeking a particular emotion like excitement can be dangerous. When there is no excitement, conjuring some up out of desperation can lead to poor decisions. Instead, let’s look for more than just excitement. Seek stability, nourishment, warmth, etc. If I can let go of needing big things to happen, I can focus on the things that sustain me through my day.
LET IT BE: Let today be regular. Make a habit out of appreciating these days. You’re still doing things that are special. Your mindset determines if they are boring or meaningful. Find value in the small, ordinary tasks you complete.
GENERATE YOUR OWN: If ordinary days bore you, create a change to get excited about. Take a new route on your bike ride, read a different book during your morning routine, or try a new recipe for dinner. Small twists on your regular day can have a significant effect.
Life can be pretty ordinary, but don’t we wish for that when things get hectic? I’m trying to practice enjoying all versions of my day. And if I can’t feel enjoyment for a moment, I remind myself that I don’t have to feel something in order to take the next right step.
ACTION: Take one minute today to identify a small, positive change you can make to your routine. Whether it’s taking a different route on your walk or bike ride, trying a new recipe, or listening to a new podcast, this small shift can bring a sense of novelty and excitement to your day, helping you appreciate the ordinary moments.
