What We Resist Persists

Have you ever noticed that the things you try to push away seem to cling to you, and even grow? For example, by trying to push away anxious thoughts, you might experience increased anxiety and even panic attacks. Avoiding a challenging conversation allows the tension and unresolved issues to fester. And fear of diagnosis can lead to worsening health problems down the line.

This phenomenon can be explained with the phrase: “what you resist persists.”  The more we try to push something away, the more it seems to dominate our thoughts and actions.

I’ve had the experience of fearing a diagnosis. It felt easier to avoid the doctor’s appointment altogether. But I learned a valuable lesson.  Instead of facing it alone, I asked someone to either come with me or be available for a call both before and after I learned the results of the test.  Having that support system made a world of difference.

The more I learn about my flaws and fears, the more I get to figure out the kind of help I need. It takes stepping outside my comfort zone to take care of myself. But the more I practice, the easier it becomes.

Here are some ways to break free from the cycle of resistance:

  • Acknowledge: The first step is to acknowledge the challenge or difficulty you’re facing. Ignoring it won’t make it disappear.
  • Seek Support: Don’t be afraid to reach out for help from friends, family, therapists, or support groups. Sharing your struggles can be incredibly empowering.
  • Develop coping mechanisms: Explore strategies like mindfulness exercises and techniques to manage difficult emotions and situations. (The 8 OMAT exercises have been an essential practice for me.)
  • Focus on solutions: Instead of dwelling on the problem, shift your focus to finding solutions. What steps can you take to address the challenge?

Life is full of challenges. Although it can feel scary, it is very possible and helpful to acknowledge the tough circumstances rather than avoid addressing them. Nobody is perfect. Accepting your flaws is the first step to working on them and becoming a more confident person.

The more we embrace challenges and learn to navigate them, the more resilient and empowered we become.

ACTION: The next time you find yourself resisting something, remember: what you resist persists. Take a deep breath, acknowledge the challenge, and start exploring ways to move forward.
