The Power of Now
We hear it all the time: “be present,” “live in the moment.” But, what exactly does that mean?
It’s not about ignoring your to-do list or forgetting about responsibilities. It’s about focusing on what’s happening right now. Our minds love to jump ahead, worrying about deadlines and errands. But that constant “what next?” can steal our attention and our opportunity for joy.
Of course, life throws curveballs. Sometimes things need our immediate attention. If it’s a true emergency, handle it! But most of the time, those urgent tasks can wait a few mindful moments.
When I notice my mind start racing to the future or dreading the past, I practice pausing. I look around and realize that the thoughts I was focusing on don’t need attention right now. There is no urgency to respond to. Instead, I look around at what’s actually happening. Maybe I’m riding a bridge on a bike and notice the water on either side of me. I might take a moment to feel the sun on my face. The point is to be honest with myself about what’s truly happening in the moment. And in this moment, there is no emergency to tend to. I am okay.
Being calm and present, even in the face of a real emergency, helps you think clearer and react better. It’s like training your brain for moments of stress. The more I practice being present in everyday situations, the more prepared I could be when things get hectic.
ACTION: If you find yourself rushing through life today, take a deep breath and notice what’s happening right around you. If it’s not an emergency, take a moment to be present.
