Foam-Oh!

Reflecting on our mistakes is vital, but what if we also applaud the successes, the parts that worked well?

In the past, I used to take a midday walk to a coffee shop and treat myself to a cappuccino. It was a delightful way to boost my day. However, I realized that this habit had negative financial effects. While buying a cup of coffee daily wouldn’t bankrupt me, it was taking a toll on my wallet, especially when it, sometimes, progressed to twice-daily.

It was time to explore alternatives. Completely stopping the daily habit seemed extreme, considering the positive aspects it offered. So, I evaluated the situation and decided to retain some of the positive aspects while addressing the negative.

Taking a break from work, going for a walk, and treating myself were the positive aspects I wanted to keep. So, I refined the habit by making my own coffee instead of buying it every day, occasionally skipping the coffee altogether, and treating myself at the coffee shop on special occasion.

It’s comforting to realize that I don’t have to completely break a habit to improve my situation. I can choose what I really enjoy and leave the rest behind.

ACTION: Take a look at a habit you’d like to change, like maybe snacking too frequently. Make a list of what works (stress relief?) and what doesn’t (unhealthy choices?). Then, make small tweaks until you find a solution that works better for you.
