The Universe is Against Me

Everything seems to be going badly for me recently. My projected costs for life are more than I anticipated, my bike tire has gotten a flat every other week, and the new place I moved into has multiple issues on a regular basis. It feels like every decision I’ve made recently has come with a smack in the face. It can feel really scary and make me a little hesitant to take actions. When that happens, I can start feeling like I want to run away or stay in bed all day. It feels like no matter how hard I try and how much I work, I trip and fall—like the Universe is against me or something.

The thing is, that’s true. There’s no such thing as the universe being against me. It is true that I’ve had some falls. Physical and emotional. But since I’m still here, it means I’ve also had a lot of “getting up.” When I’m on the ground, my hope is that I’ve built up enough resilience to recognize—even in my bad state—that I have the capacity to get up and try again. Big falls mean I have to pick up more tools to try again, but the fact that I sharpen my tools on a daily basis makes it not only easier to get up, but easier to recognize that there is a way to get up and a place to get up to.

ACTION: Make a habit of sharpening your tools, even when you don’t feel like it. Journal every morning to clear your mind. Stay connected to your community for support and accountability. Incorporate yoga, exercise, or meditation into your daily routine. These practices build resilience over time, so when life knocks you down, you’ll be better prepared to get back up.

Why Feelings Matter

How are you? How are you doing? What are you feeling? These questions are everywhere, but they’ve mostly turned into polite greetings. We often respond with a quick, “Fine,” “Can’t complain,” or “Not...
