Why Are You Doing That?

When we head to work, there’s usually a clear motivator—put in the time, get paid. But outside of that? What drives us to do the tasks that don’t come with a paycheck? If we don’t have an obvious reason, those tasks can feel overwhelming or pointless.

This is where asking **why** becomes really helpful. When I take a moment to understand the reason behind what I’m doing, even the less exciting tasks make sense. Without that “why,” it’s easy to get stuck or feel unmotivated.

For example:

– **Why take a shower?** Because I don’t want to walk around feeling gross all day.
– **Why make a nutritious meal?** So I can have the energy I need for a full day.
– **Why socialize?** Because even though it can feel awkward, it keeps me connected and grounded.

Getting used to asking “why” helps me handle the things that need to get done. Instead of being overwhelmed by a long list of tasks, I can focus on why each one matters. It turns something I’m dreading into something I understand—and that makes it a lot easier to move forward.

By reconnecting with the reasons behind my actions, I start to make progress, one small “why” at a time.

**ACTION:** Before starting any task today, take a moment to ask yourself why you’re doing it. Whether it’s a chore, a responsibility, or something fun, connect with the reason behind it. This helps shift your mindset from “I have to” to “I choose to.”
