Healing in Small Steps

Yesterday was tough. I spent most of it in bed, waiting out the pain from my recent bike accident, hoping for a little relief so I could get to the things I wanted—and needed—to do. I like to feel like I’m thriving every day, but right now, my body’s asking for something different: it needs rest and healing. It’s not exactly how I’d choose to spend my day, but instead of fighting it, I’m listening.

Resting my body, though, brings up challenges for my mind. When I’m stuck in bed, I start hearing thoughts like, “I’m falling behind,” “I’m getting weaker,” or “I’m not doing enough.” I know these thoughts only add to the struggle, so I’ve been practicing interrupting them and refocusing on what I need in each moment.

Taking small, mindful steps has been helping me keep patience with these physical challenges. Each little step reminds me they add up, even when they don’t look like my usual progress.

Today, I remind myself it’s a fresh start. I’ll check in and ask what feels possible right now, without assumptions about what it “should” be. Maybe today will be another low-energy day, but I’ll still check in and see. Today is new, and I’ll take it as it comes.

ACTION: Check in with yourself today. If you’re feeling behind, ask what’s possible now without judgment. Take it one small step at a time, with patience for wherever you are in the process.

I used to think every battle was worth fighting. If something didn’t feel right, I reacted. I spoke up, pushed back, made it known. I thought that was strength. I didn’t want to feel like a...
