How to Get What You Want

It’s almost my birthday! Okay, I know it’s not almost my birthday—it’s on December 2nd. And I also know I don’t really have a whole “birthday month” or “birthday week,” but I like to say it anyway. Why? Because it gives me something to look forward to. The excitement of knowing there’s a day (or a few days, if I want) that’s all about me—even if I’m making it up—motivates me.

I’ve always found it hard to ask for what I need or want, but creating “special” days to celebrate has given me an excuse to do that with less guilt. Yeah, I know I sound a little like a five-year-old getting hyped over their big day. But frankly, it’s been a good way for me to practice finding and voicing what I’m looking for.

As I get older, I’m finding more ways to give myself what I need, so I don’t need the fuss as much. But hey, fusses can still be fun!

ACTION: Make up an excuse to celebrate. Think about how you want to mark the occasion and explore what you’re really looking for. Can you give some of that to yourself today?
